Always Home’s HEART TO HEART gala on Friday, April 19, 2024 drew 350 attendees who came together to Prevent Family Homelessness and to recognize community leaders Karen Stone, David Schulz, Amanda Arling and The Whalers Inn. Also present was State Senator Heather Somers who acknowledged this year’s gala honorees with Certificates of Special Recognition.
In her remarks, Always Home’s Executive Director Tricia Cunningham commended long-time Mystic residents and couple Karen Stone and David Schulz, Amanda Always Home’s HEART TO HEART Gala, honoring Karen Stone, David Schulz, Amanda Arling and The Whaler’s Inn, is Friday, April 19, 2024 at the Mystic Marriott Hotel & Spa. The Gala is the nonprofit social service agency’s primary fundraiser for the year and benefits Always Home’s mission, Preventing Family Homelessness.
“Always Home started in 1998 as a small, community-driven initiative to address the local issue of homelessness,” said Tricia Cunningham, Always Home’s Executive Director. “Since then, we’ve The City of Groton and Groton Utilities are happy to announce the concert schedule for the 2024 City Cabaret concert series.
City Cabaret is a series of indoor concerts which start in January each year. These concerts are held in an intimate setting that gives spectators an opportunity to see smaller musical groups, allowing for a more-up close and personal experience.
All concerts are held on Sundays and are performed at the City of Groton Municipal Building Auditorium. Concerts begin at 3:00 p.m. and United Way of Southeastern Connecticut held its first-ever gala benefit event to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center. United for Gemma honored the evolution of the Food Center from 1988 to present-day, as well as founder Gemma Moran, who passed away earlier this year.
The annual Gemma E. Moran Award for Inspiration was presented to James Newman, a member of United Way’s Board of Directors and the MDA-UAW Local 571.

June is finally here which means our summer concert season is just around the corner! Get ready to rock out in the park with our stellar lineup of 2023 bands. We have several bands making their Washington Park debut in 2023 while at the same time we are bringing back a number of our all-time favorites. First up is regional favorite Red Light on June 16th, followed by a different awesome band each Friday through the end of July.
All shows are at Washington Park in the City of Groton, starting at 6:30 pm. On Monday, November 30th the City of Groton and Groton Utilities, along with the Connecticut Department of Public Health’s (DPH) Drinking Water Section, held a virtual celebration to mark completion of a crucial phase of Groton Utilities’ water treatment plant construction project. With completion of phase three (out of five) of the plant rollout, water is now being clarified and filtered within the new water treatment plant.
The new filtration plant replaces a plant that was originally constructed in As we get deeper into the winter the City of Groton Cabaret 2020 Concert Series is going full-throttle with its third band of the series – Azalea Drive. Azalea Drive is one of the most popular bands in the region, playing at all sorts of venues throughout the area over the years. And now we have the distinct pleasure of having them play for us on Sunday, February 9th in the City of Groton Auditorium beginning at 3:00 p.m.
This is the trimmed down and mellowed up version of the popular full band Azalea The Thames River Heritage Park will offer a special schedule for the hop-on hop-off water taxi service on Saturday, September 14 and Sunday, September 15, during the Connecticut Maritime Heritage Festival being held at Fort Trumbull and City Pier in New London.
The Water Taxi will operate continuous express water taxi service between Fort Trumbull and City Pier in New London and between Fort Trumbull and Thames River Landing in Groton from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
The Water Taxi will operate on a regular New London, CT – The Thames River Heritage Park has been awarded “Best Historical Attraction” in the state by CT Magazine.
The Park is a collection of national and historic sites along two shores of the Thames River linked by a water taxi that tell the stories that shaped our nation and our region during the past 400 years.

This Five After Six promotion is to encourage more riders to use the water taxi to enjoy dinner and evening activities in downtown New London. “Although our ridership is up significantly as compared to last year, Sunday evenings are not as busy as we’d like to see,” says Thames River Heritage New London, CT – Launching for the season on Friday, May 25, 2018, the Thames River Heritage Park Water Taxi will be extending its operating hours on Friday and Saturday nights to accommodate riders crossing the river for dinner and evening events. The new hours are Friday noon to 10 PM, Saturday 10 AM to 10 PM. and Sunday and holidays 10 .AM. to 9 PM through September 16, 2018.
In addition, service to Fort Trumbull will stop at 7 p.m. and will run between City Pier and Thames River Landing every twenty Registration is now open for the Thames River Quest, a free, three-part, treasure hunt-style educational hike for all ages created by Connecticut Sea Grant and the Thames River Heritage Park as a new, unique offering for Connecticut Trails Day on June 2.

Perry had previously been the Park’s Interim Executive Director and now assumes the position in a permanent capacity.

“Southeastern CT is rich with history and the Thames River Heritage Park will play a GROTON - The sounds of the band Rewind will be featured this week at Concerts in the Park 2017 on Friday (July 7, 2017) at Washington Park in the City of Groton.
Rewind is a six-piece band consisting of digital drums, two keyboards, guitar, percussion and bass. The group features strong vocals while performing the classic hits of groups like Journey, Doobies, Eagles, Billy Joel, Springsteen and many more.
The concert series is co-sponsored and co-produced by Groton Utilities and the City of Groton Parks New London, CT – The Thames River Heritage Park water taxi season passes are now available for purchase at ThamesRiveHeritagePark.org. Now in its second season the water taxis will begin operation Friday, May 26, 2017. The service connects Fort Trumbull in New New London, CT – The Thames River Heritage Park is looking for volunteers who want to create positive and memorable experiences for visitors and residences who ride the Water Taxi and who visit the local heritage sites within the Park. Volunteers are needed Friday – Sunday beginning Memorial Day weekend through mid-September in 2- and 4-hour shifts between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
Volunteers will be Park Ambassadors who will be stationed at the three Water Taxi landing sites in New London and Groton to provide “This is a long overdue investment in the city’s future and will also provide essential water service to surrounding communities”

The water taxis are authentic Navy launches formerly used to transport servicemen and women from larger ships to shore. They are the central Oct. 22 fundraiser for Sofia Sees Hope to feature Jean Bennett M.D., Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Mystic, CT – Dr. Jean Bennett, M.D., Ph.D., a groundbreaking researcher from the University of Pennsylvania who is working to cure blindness, will be the keynote speaker at this year’s Dinner in the Dark event to benefit local charity Sofia Sees Hope.
